the kids are forcing a re-entry earlier than I am quite comfortable with - not due to Covid fears, more like - reclusiveness suited me (or didn’t really, but it is an easy place to reside.) I shook someone’s hand yesterday for the first time in over 1 1/2 years. That felt transgressive.
I've worked throughout - but have been to 2 local theater performances - "Godspell" last fall and a "Musical Review" in April. Both were outside and socially distanced - and a LOT of fun!
Just reading this was music to my ears! As for dipping my toes.....a dear friend, who wears a straw boater too, will be reopening his outdoor music series on the North Fork this month. Hopefully, you will be able to attend a concert or two here with us Sheila.
Thank you for pointing out the proper name of the hat. Of course, it's 'a boater,' the uniform of summertime gazebo impresarios. I hear the siren call of the North Fork. Count me in, of course. Thank you for always commenting and supporting my work.
Your essay never missed a beat ( so to speak): I didn't even notice that you had written straw hat rather than straw boater as the essay evoked the scene so well.....
We are looking forward to toe dipping with you soon!
I’ve been dipping my toes in starting last summer. I went to 4-5 variety shows in Central Park (masks and distanced) and saw more male strippers in two months than in my whole life And clowns including Bill Irwin doing his version of Shakespeare. On the way home from that I happened upon swing dancing on the steps of the Museum of Natural History. With the big lights on the museum it looked like a Cecil B DeMille production and I ended up taking my tapping feet up the stairs and joining in. There was no partner dancing allowed so it was a unique opportunity to explore dancing without knowing how and doing my own thing along side others doing their own thing. We did it every week except when it got snowy and cold and we’re back at it now. And I’ve made a new group of on the way to being perhaps friends!!!
Wonderful read!

The call to being in a quiet place is strong. I get that. Thank you for reading and commenting. It means so much to me.

Hurrah for getting out and for being able to work. Thank you so much for weighing in, Mari Lou.

A gentle reminder to be open to the unexpected!
What a magical post, Sheila! I truly enjoy reading your writing. Keep dipping your toes so we can read about it.
Abigail, many thanks for reading it and for your very kind words. I truly appreciate the support, my friend.

Sheila, love, love your essay! Made my heart feel light and ready for life returning to some kind of normalcy!
Thank you, Patrice. I so appreciate your reading and commenting. And amen to normalcy.

I love this, Maxine. There is nothing quite like dancing in the streets on NYC.
Love the straw hat man ending...
Great job as usual...
Still waiting for your book...
Thank you!
i guess you could call it dipping my toes back in the world…….I’m going on a blind date tonight!!😂😎
Hurrah, Mike. I know your girl would want to see you out and about. I see lots of music in your future, friend.
